Built in 1737 as a Mason's
home, Le Douit Bourget is much more than a Normandy farmhouse with its
beamed interior and finely carved stone chimneys, the house has changed
little over the centuries.
On arrival there is ample
parking in a pretty gravelled courtyard, planted with topiary and french
lavender. The house is set in six acres of tranquil countryside with a
gentle stream bordering the property and running through
the garden acting as a haven for birds and wildlife. The two original
garden walls give warmth and shelter for a rich variety of plants including
a grapevine, jasmine, old english roses and clematis, all of which provide
a wonderful scent during summer evenings.
The gardens have been recently
re-landscaped in a semi-formal french style with an 18m long canal bordered
with limes and a variety of plants from the period.
We have ample grass for
children to play in a safe environment. During the summer months we also
offer a 5m diameter inflatable swimming pool (1.2m deep) which is unheated
but very refreshing on hot days as well as ball
games including petanque, table-tennis and badminton.
There are many places to
go for a stroll from the house, one of which is a Celtic Camp with charming
woods offering country views.

We have two twin bedrooms
and a third good-sized attic bedroom with double bed. We have completely
re-decorated and replaced all the furniture to a very high standard giving
the rooms attractive character with antiques and pictures. The family
kitchen is where breakfast is served and guests are most welcome to use
our sitting room.
We can also offer 'Table
d'Hote' - a 3 course evening meal if you desire. Breakfast and dinner
are often served in the garden throughout the summer.
Two of the bedrooms are
on the first floor and the third is on the second floor. The shower room,
with wash-basin and WC is on the ground floor. Guests have their own private
entrance hall where there are tea & coffee
making facilities, a fridge and a microwave. Should you prefer self-catering
you can rent the three bedrooms as a gite, with private kitchen-diner
and sitting room.
We also offer in the main
house a large bedroom with king-size bed and en-suite bathroom, available
for two persons, with lovely garden views.

We are located in a very quiet valley
on the border of Orne and Calvados, with the picturesque Pays d'Auge
just a few miles to the north-east, with its rolling countryside and
attractive columbage (half-timbered) villages
including the famous villages of Camembert and Beuvron-en-Auge. To the
north-west lies the city of Caen (45mins) and 15 minutes further on
is Caen's ferryport (Ouistreham). We are therefore an ideal stopping-off
point for anyone heading further south.
We are between the towns
of Falaise (10 mins) and Argentan (12mins). The closest small town is
Trun (5mins), which has a supermarket, shops, banks, bars & restaurants.
Falaise is the birthplace
of William the Conqueror and his castle still stands there. Argentan has
the famous Haras du Pin - The National Stud. There are also many reasonably
priced restaurants around us, where you can
try some local dishes along with a glass of Normandy cider or Calvados
brandy. The picturesque countryside of Suisse Normande is a short drive
away (20 mins) and is ideal for ramblers and mountain-bikers. Maps are
available, and we currently have two adult mountain-bikes for hire (nominal
charge).
The D-Day Landing Beaches
and the coastal resorts are an hour's drive. Alençon (45 minutes)
is an ancient and un-spoilt town, famous for lace making. Caen has good
shopping, nightlife, and many museums. Bayeux has the world famous tapestry
and Deauville, a racecourse, casino and designer boutiques. A great day
out is Honfleur (1hr 15mins) with its medieval streets, ancient harbour
and an enormous array of restaurants and art
galleries. To the west is the extraordinary World Heritage Site of Mont
Saint Michel which is around 2 hours.
